Web Modifications

RG Riley has spent considerable time and money in 2007 improving our web site features and facilitating the user experience. Many of the changes are transparent and can be seen simply by visiting our web site. Other changes are more subtle and require further clarification. The following paragraphs describe the most significant changes in detail.

The most significant change for 2007 has been the addition of an Online Catalog in May. The online catalog represents and opportunity for RG Riley to display our products without requiring registration or logging onto the ordering system.

The main page of the online catalog also includes the Riley Super Buy which has attracted considerable attention. This is our special of the day and we think an extreme value. The Riley Super Buy is updated nightly Sunday through Friday.

The catalog allows are customers and guests to view products by age range by clicking on one of the age images located at the bottom of the online catalog main page. Users can also view products by clicking on one of the many product categories we carry. The product categories are located in the left navigation section in the blue border. The browse that is displayed once a link has been clicked can be further refined by selecting sub categories from the drop down list. Clicking on any of the individual styles allows the user to view the feature details for that item. Public pricing can be seen by mousing over a color or by selecting a color from the drop down list located on the feature detail page. The Online Catalog is tied directly to the Online Ordering module and once an item has been selected a registered user can view the current packing details and current pricing by clicking on the "Login/Return to Order Online" button and logging into the ordering module.

The online catalog was modified in October to include warehouse availability in "cases" for each of the warehouses that are in stock on the item. Below the image on the browse page you will see the warehouse and the number of cases on hand. This modification resulted from requests from many of our west coast customers who wanted to know which items were located in our Los Angeles warehouse. We are planning additional modifications to show availability by color and this should be available by early 2008. Only the warehouse(s) listed have inventory.

We have added a Riley real time calculator to the quick order screen which eliminates the necessity of using a calculator to determine the unit cost. Simply click on the price hyper link on the quick order page and the unit cost will be displayed for each tier price. This includes special pricing and closeout pricing.

The Off Price Show August 24th through 28th

The Off price show has come and gone and for another fall season. The show for the most part was extremely successful as many large and small buyers were present. The show drew many buyers from across the retail spectrum including food, drug, discount department store chains, independent retailers and wholesalers. While the traffic is never as heavy as it is in February, it was surprisingly good over the weekend. Sunday August 26th was by far the heaviest traffic day; as was expected.
The number one question at Riley was "Where can I find fleece?" The simple answer is that the fleece market is in very short supply and most age ranges of fleece and many product categories seem to be in short supply. It seems that many of the major retailers have pushed back initial deliveries and they are delaying putting goods on the floor. Men's and women's sweat pants seem to be in shortest supply with hooded sweat shirts are coming in at a close second. We believe the off price fleece market will remain very tight the whole year as our inventories are the lowest they have been in a decade.

While the market may be tight, opportunities still exist to pick up some good buys. Our inventory in boys remains strong including boys zip hoods and pants. We have several containers of men's pants coming in from Pakistan in early October and our men's hooded inventory is expected to grow over the next three weeks. Missy, plus and girls fleece inventories are very tight at this time and should remain scarce barring a major influx of goods. Infant and toddler fleece is holding up well through August and the availability looks good for the whole year.

Please keep an eye on your inventory levels and pick up your basics early before the season breaks and the inventories dwindle.

Thanks to everyone who stopped in to see Riley in Salon A....We had an very successful show thanks to everyone who stopped in to view our products. The next off price show we will be attending is scheduled for February in Las Vegas.

The Online Catalog

The Online Catalog is now available and although not perfect, it is functional. This module has taken months to develop and it has been extremely difficult to get up and running. We are still working on the project and it will be weeks or even months before we are satisfied with the layout.
Our intent for the catalog was to give our site users another way to view our products in a more global manner without the need to log in or register for web access. Instead of logging in and searching our entire data base of products; the catalog is set up to list all items once a product category has been selected. You can then refine the category and display all items by the age range. This is extremely beneficial for those customers who only purchase one age range and for those companies that have multiple buyers. It is also invaluable for those companies that may only buy one type of product like T-shirts.
The Online catalog makes it easier to view single color case packs and styles that we pack in multiple color assortments. See style 20066 in the tee shirts category listed under the men's age range. We pack this style by assorted colors, black only and white only and we will continue to introduce more solid color packs as we receive additional inventory from our suppliers.
The prices listed in the Online catalog are generic and do not necessarily reflect the most current pricing on that item. You can view the pricing on the Online catalog by selecting a color from the drop down menu or by placing your cursor on the color located above the feature details. Current pricing can only be seen by registering for an account and using our Order Online module. The online catalog is linked to our main ordering module. Registered users can select an item within the online catalog and by clicking on the description hyper link or clicking on the place order link you will be redirected to our ordering module where you can log in and view the current price, the packing details and the warehouse location for each item. You are then free to purchase that item, navigate back to the online catalog or stay within the order online module and view our specials, closeouts, recent packing's and new items. The systems are designed to be used in conjunction with each other. The Online catalog for a broad overview of our available inventory and the order online module for a more detailed look at each style.
We hope you find the online catalog beneficial and welcome any comments you may have about this module or any other part of our web site. Your comments can be posted to this blog or emailed to sales@rgriley.com

Online Freight Quote companies

The internet is changing the way we as business people do business.
Simply stated business in the 21st century is so fluid and so very dynamic as a result of the power of the internet and high speed computers. This gives consumers in every walk off life a tremendous opportunity. It is especially relevant for small and mid size business that do not have large staffs. Today a small or medium size company can find inexpensive airline tickets, cheap hotel rates, competitive freight rates and new products all at the click of a mouse. You now have the freedom to surf the web while watching TV or enjoying your favorite beverage and be productive in your spare time. This can all be done when you choose to use your computer and at your own pace.

Major companies are aware of the ever increasing use of the web and are finding ways to reduce costs, sell off excess inventory and keep there products and services in front of the consumer. One service we have found that is having a tremendous impact in our business is the use of online freight quote companies. You can find many of these companies on the web by entering freight quote in the search field on Google or Yahoo. My Freight World is one example and we have found savings of 25% to 40% for our customers. These savings are typical for shipments that exceed 200 hundred pounds. These freight brokers have large discounts with a great deal of trucking companies and each trucking company must compete to get the business.

You can use this knowledge to save money on our web site. When you are ready to complete and order on our web site go to the Delivery Options page and set the carrier to UPS. You can view the order details by clicking on the Show Details link. This will give you the weight and the number of cases for the shipment. In a separate browser open up your favorite online broker and get a freight quote. You will need the zip code for the origin and the destination. You can find our zip codes on the home page for each of our three distribution centers. If you find a quote that is less expensive, change the carrier on the Delivery Options Page to read customer provided carrier and enter the carrier in the comment field on the Order Summary Page. We will use this method and you will be shipped collect using your broker or trucking company.
We have several words of advice. You will need to sign up with one of these companies and be prepared to have the actual costs for the freight come in slightly higher than the original quote. When I started this comment you will recall my statement about business being fluid and therefore the trucking companies often increase the rate from the original amount for a variety of reasons. The change in fuel being the number one reason. The rule is always buyer beware but we have had great success with this method.
