Its show time

The first show of the fall season is the ASD/AMD show which will feature hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of buyers. The show is a general merchandise show covering everything from gift ware and hard goods to apparel and sporting goods. Exhibitors from all over the world setup and display their products and buyers from all over the world can browse the various product lines looking for good buys to stock there shelves for the fall season. It is impossible to classify the buyers and the type of operations they run but in general the ASD show draws buyers from all spectrum's. Convenience stores, appliance stores, discount stores, health and beauty stores, thrift stores, and independent retailers and merchants are all in attendance. The main attraction is closeouts and great prices. This is a chance to find new vendors and great opportunities for the fall and holiday season. The ASD/AMD show runs from August 9th to August 12th and is held in multiple locations including the Sands convention center and the Las Vegas convention center. If you will be attending the ASD show and you are interested in off price apparel please stop by and see RG Riley. Please click on the trade show link for details.

The second major show that RG Riley will be attending is the Off-Price show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show will be held in the Sands convention center with the show dates overlapping the MAGIC show. The Off-Price show features off price apparel in all age ranges.
Hundreds of country's biggest wholesalers will display branded and mass merchandise apparel at deeply discounted prices. In general the buyers represent chain stores, independent retailers and regional retailers with a value conscious customer base. The major emphasis is off price apparel including imported clothing as well as closeout and irregular apparel.

With the sluggish economy the off-price sector continues to pick up steam as retail buyers look to find better and less expensive products for their every day needs. Please click on the trade show link for dates and details.

If you would like to read more about the ASD/AMD show or Off-Price show please click on the show name and you will be directed to their respective web sites. These web sites also feature online registration.

Its All about the price

The off price business has always been about the prices we charge and the products we deliver and in recent times this statement could not be truer. In the last few years the price points have dropped considerably and the difference between a sale or a lost order can simply come down to pennies. The decision to accept or reject an order was based on supply and demand of the item and the profit or loss that would result.

The supply and demand curves if not broken are significantly impacted with the recent changes in the economy. On the supply side our industry continues to see shortages in many product categories. These shortages normally produce an increase in demand and therefore price increases. The problem is that the demand in off price industry is strictly tied to the price and if the prices are dropping and the inventory levels are declining how can the demand be met.

The demand side is driven by the willingness of the consumers to spend additional dollars on products. With the economy faltering and the consumers unwillingness to spend manufacturers are producing fewer goods and therefore the off price industry is seeing fewer irregulars and less closeouts.

The big question becomes will prices rise or will we go without?

Where has all the inventory gone

The Global recession that has been impacting all countries and most major business sectors is having a dramatic impact on the off price industry and the availability of merchandise. RG Riley has been seeing declining inventory levels for the better part of the last 9 months. Recently we have seen a precipitous decline in the availability in the irregular tee shirt market with broad impact on the white tee shirt inventory levels. These shortages stem from production cut backs as the producers work to reduce their on hand inventory and thereby reduce there day to day operating cost.

These recent shortages while painful will probably continue to impact the off price apparel market for the next 3 to 6 months and RG Riley expects to see shortages in several key areas for the foreseeable future. While these shortages are problematic they should serve to stabilize pricing and put a halt to the downward spiral in off price apparel prices. While we do not expect to see sky rocketing prices we are already seeing upward pressure on many items that are in short supply. The upward pricing pressures may push prices up by as much as 10% in the next 6 to 12 months.

Over the long haul we continue to see strength in the off price area and foresee continued growth as consumers continue to seek bargains. Many of RG Riley's retail outlets are seeing overall strength and sales increases as the consumer trades down to more value driven retailers.

RG Riley is a closeout wholesaler of off price apparel to the discount trade. Our customers include chain stores, drug and food stores, swap meets and flea markets, general merchandise and independent stores. We provide discount apparel at tremendous pricing to many of the charitable operations and assistance programs around the country. RG Riley serving the discount apparel market for over 80 years.

What comes next to www.rgriley.com

Web sites like businesses can never stand still. Even as we work through the upgrade and fix the numerous bugs and display issues we have on the site, our vision is moving to the next modifications and changes that will enable our customers to get more from our site.

These changes include additional product lines, better navigation and a faster environment.

We are currently reviewing the additions of underwear, socks and general merchandise to our product lines.

Already in development is a search by grade which will allow our users to search for items based on the quality of the garment within the online catalog browse. This would enable the user to search for first quality, irregulars, or imperfects based on the customers needs.

The navigation has been improved with a hot link to the quick order screen from the banner. We hope you will use this quickorder link and the online catalog link to jump back and forth from the online catalog to the ordering section.

Our internet service provider is upgrading the speed and reliability of our network tonight and this should eliminate many of the timeouts and stalls that are experienced on our web site.

Pick and scan functionality is in the works and while we will need to make all warehouses RF ready, which will take some time, it will increase our accuracy on shipments and increase the speed in the shipping department. Pick and scan software will validate the item is part the order and the ship date is within the time frame parameter requested by the customer. Currently we ship 95% of our orders the same day with a 98% accuracy.

We have big plans for our trailer load users as well as our imperfect users. Changes are in the works to give our distributors and jobbers the ability to view our in coming shipments before they arrive at our distribution centers.

If you experience any problems on the updated web site please drop a note to sales@rgriley.com. We truly appreciate all insights provided.

RG Riley upgrades software

This coming Saturday 4.25.2009 we will be upgrading our back office software as well as upgrading our web site and web site features. The web site will be down Saturday from 6:00 am until 1:00 pm. While we believe this transition will go smoothly it will not happen with out some pain. Please expect delays in shipments and possible problems on http://www.rgriley.com/ for the first part of next week.

Major changes will be seen in the RG Riley banner with the addition of links to most of our popular pages including our twitter feed, faq, blog and an a link to our warehouse locations including a feed from Google maps which will help you find our various locations.

Included in this upgrade will be a link to our My Account feature which will enable our users to manage their account once the user has logged in to the site. The user will now be able to edit their account including adding contacts, updating email addresses, and updating the users tax ID number and add multiple ship to addresses. The user can also add additional users to manage their account and place orders. Within the My Account section we have added a link to view your sales history by dollars and by products. Lastly the user will be able to check the progress of each order and track UPS or Fed Ex shipments. The My account feature will simplify the ability for the web user to change their existing password.

In terms of how our customer service personnel and how our web customers browse our inventory we believe we have update and simplified the process. The closeouts tab has been renamed discontinued and now can be searched by product category or by mill. RG Riley sells closeout and irregular clothing and therefore the change in the name from closeouts to discontinued is more fitting with the market we are serving. Discontinued items are styles or colors we are liquidating and all have been marked down. These can include styles that may be one color and size or simply an item that we need to liquidate. Please view our packing details to see the exact packing you are buying. We discontinue styles for many reasons including slow moving items, items that are only available in one warehouse, small quantity styles and items that are being replaced by newer items. The online catalog will now display a header for new styles as well as discontinued styles and styles that are currently on special. The discontinued styles and specials will display the closeout or sale price on the main browse of the quick order screen to enable our users to be able to view only those items that meet the price point they are looking to purchase.

We hope you will find these changes beneficial in your search for off price clothing and that it will serve to increase your profits.

Keeping up with RG Riley

The weather is breaking and our customers are taking advantage of the changes in the weather by opening their stands at the locale flea markets or by promoting new inventory on side walk sales or in store promotions. The demand for new items is escalating as each customer seeks to expand their apparel inventory for the summer season.

The next big event on the calendar is Mothers day and with it being just around the corner, our customers are seeking new items in the women's area to take advantage holiday selling. The best way to keep up with our new items is to visit our web site on a weekly basis and log in to the quick order screen. The user can then click on our Recent Packing's tab and view the items we have packed over the last 14 days. This is a rolling display and items do not display after the 14 day period. These items may still be available but are no longer considered recent packing's. This enables our customers and staff to view only those items that are new.

The recent packing's tab is the most visited area of our web site both by our sales staff and our customer base and in many cases items are here today and gone tomorrow. The advantage goes to the user who takes a few minutes every couple of days to visit the web site and to view the newest arrivals. In many cases the item is sold out even before the image can be uploaded which can take a few days.

We hope you will take advantage of this feature and view some of our newer arrivals. Click on the style link two view just 2 of the 38 new packing's that are displaying today. We have Missy jersey knit rib pants available today for $3.00 per piece and you can view the details by clicking on style number 97530. We also have Women's plus size French Terry Capri's at $3.00 per piece click on style J5360 for details.

While the economy may have you down we are continuing see robust growth in the off price wholesale apparel area both in terms of new customers and increased purchases. If your business needs a little pick up check out our recent packing's and you may find a new item to drive sales.

Rg Riley is a wholesaler of offprice apparel in prepack cases. We sell closeouts, irregulars, and surplus clothing to the discount trade.

Making www.rgriley.com easier to navigate

We have designed the http://www.rgriley.com/ web site not just as a means to order online but also as a platform for our customers and subscribers and staff to view our products online jointly. It is this platform that enables everyone to see the image, description, packing details, pricing and the location of the inventory in order to make the best buying decisions possible. Our internet site is used by many of our customers including our distributors, retailers, flea marketers, printers and embroiderers, and charitable organizations just to name a few.

With any technology navigating the site in a timely fashion can be a little difficult when you first get started. In the next few paragraphs I hope to present a few helpful hints that will enable the user to navigate our site faster and produce much more details.

  1. The number one helpful hint is to create multiple browser instantiations so that the user does not have to navigate back and forth through the online catalog and the ordering section. This can be done with tab browsing by opening two tabs. One tab should be set to the online catalog and on the other tab the user should be logged in and viewing the quick order screen. This will enable the user to locate a style from the online catalog and view the exact pricing on the quick order screen. Enter the 5 character style number manually or copy and paste the 5 character style number from the online catalog into the style field on the quick order screen. You can then jump back and forth between the quick order screen and the online catalog by clicking on the appropriate tab. This can also be done by opening two browser sessions one set to the online catalog and the other logged in to the quick order screen.
  2. The online catalog presents may ways to view our inventory. You can click on the product line listings and scroll through all of the products which are arranged alphabetically by age range or you can click on the product line listing and select an age range from the drop down list. Clicking on the drop down list narrows the selection and can make navigation much faster for those who are only interested in one size range.
  3. The second option is to click on any of the age range images that are located at the bottom of the online catalog page and then refine your search by clicking on the drop down arrow and selecting the product line you are interested in viewing. We have many different types of buyers on our web site, some that only purchase men's items and others that only purchase hooded sweat shirts. This circular logic enables all of our customers to view the category and age range they are interested in seeing.
  4. Use the pop up displays on the online catalog by placing your cursor or mouse over an image and the inventory available will display at each of our warehouses. This enables the user the opportunity to view the inventory levels and disregard any item that does not meet their objectives.
  5. These pop ups are also available on the feature details page. By placing your cursor on any of the square color icons the inventory available as well as the packing detail information and pricing changes to match the selection. Place your cursor on any of the color icons and watch the pricing, inventory and packing information change.
  6. The packing details information are considered the most important information available on our web site. The packing details will show you the colors that are in that case for that specific packing (the color listing is located in the upper left hand corner on the line that says Desc:) as well as the sizes that will be in each carton. The overall size scale per case is listed at the bottom of the form in the row labeled size scale.
  7. The prices on the online catalog are public pricing and do not necessarily represent the actual pricing. The actual pricing can only be seen when you are logged in and on the quick order screen. The pricing is listed by the case and dividing the price by the number of prepack units will generate the actual unit cost however we have a much faster way to view the individual unit cost without using a calculator. Each price on the quick order screen is a hyper link to our Riley real time calculator and therefore simply clicking the price, sale price or closeout price will display the unit costs.
  8. Freight costs are a major issue today and we have designed the web site so that you can view the freight charges on your order prior to completing the order. Simply place items in the cart and begin the check out process. Once you have selected a ship to address you can select UPS or FEDEX and the freight costs will be displayed for your unique order. The order has not been completed so you are free to cancel the order, edit quantities in the cart or select an alternate warehouse.

RG Riley has a full staff of customer service reps that are available to help you with any of these tips, obtain a freight quote, or provide useful suggestions to help you with navigating our web site and purchasing our products. Please call 1-800-624-3922 and ask for customer service. You can order from RG Riley by phone, fax or on the internet.

Whats with the multiple packings for each style number

Before the word transparency became popular RG Riley set out on a path to enable our customers and sales staff a way to view our inventory and see the the exact case pack they would be purchasing. Our intentions are to make every effort to enable the user to be able to see the exact size scale they will receive when making any purchase. Over the last 30 years our customers have asked for more and more details about the color assortments they will actually receive and how they can make these assorted cases work for their customer base. It has always been problematic to detail what assortment the customer will actually receive when they place an order for a style and the description simply states "assorted colors and sizes". RG Riley packs 1000's of cases per week and in many examples the color assortment and the size scales change as we pack the entire inventory for any given style. In some cases we may pack the item 20, 30 or even 40 times and each packing can be different from the previous packing.

The new technology we have invested in has produced the means by which we can segregate all the different packing's and let our users choose which packing works best for their business. We are after all in the closeout business and many styles may have very limited colors and sizes even to the point of being one color one size. The simple truth to this is let the customer see what they will be receiving and adjust the price to make sure the value is commensurate with the product. This has enabled our customers to mix and match different packing's and styles and thereby increase the overall profit. Our customers purchase from a diverse set of vendors and what may be a an odd ball assortment for many may be a good value for another.

The multiple packing's will be seen on the web as Pack 1 Assorted, Pack 2 Assorted, Pack 3 white, etc. and for each different packing you will need to view the packing details. Packing's may be priced at different price points based on what we perceive as the desirability of that particular packing. We will also be able to create scales that are heavier in large and xlarge as well as packing's that are heavier on the smalls and mediums and our customers will be able to choose based on their demographics.

While we started this process a little over 6 months ago it will take a while to complete this procedure in our system so you will still see some packs that simply say assorted. These assortments may be random and we do not have the same accuracy that we have produced on those styles that say pack 1, etc.

Should you have any questions please contact one of our customer service reps.

The consumer is coming back

Sales for the first quarter are significantly above last year and our customer count continues to expand as more and more people turn to the off price industry to profit in this down economy. We have seen an increase in traffic at both the ASD show and the Off Price show as well as our walk in traffic. Many of our customers are reporting higher sales figures and while no one is telling us that business is great, we are hearing that business is improving and the consumer is returning to purchase new apparel items for the spring season. The warmer weather during the day has driven tee shirt sales and the cooler weather in the early morning and late evening continues to drive sales in fleece products. The demand remains strong for value items and in particular any liquidation item or reduced price item. Many of our customers are using our closeout items to increase margins by mixing in some of the lower cost products and thereby reducing the average cost in the overall mix. This trend has been growing all month and we are constantly looking to find additional items that we can mark down to improve our customers returns. The closeouts we have are constantly updated as items sell out and new items are added to the mix. Look for the white tank tops Style 2200G and the white shooter shirts Style 2700G to be sold out in the not to distant future. You can view these styles by clicking on the style number links. On the Internet front we have improved our servers and the speed on the site seems to improved dramatically. We will be upgrading our software in the month of April and I am sure we will have some issues but overall we think the new software will help our staff to able to operate with greater ease and functionality. We hope the new software will bring a much needed improvement to customers and sales staff while they try to sort through our ever growing product mix. Look to see a greater availability in children's products in April and hopefully a larger availability in adult white tee shirts. New inventory in white tee shirts will be available by April 1st.

Can anyone say twitter

The hottest buzz words on the web are "social networking" and although this has been on the web for years with web sites like My Space and Face Book a new start up company has created a environment that seems to be what everyone is looking for. The new start up is twitter.com founded in 2006 and it is the third largest social network behind Face book and My Space. With social networking being the next craze RG Riley has added twitter to our web site. We hope that our community of subscribers, customers, distributors and vendors will be able to use the social networking structure to make the off price community more transparent by answering questions and providing updates on product trends and availability. We think it would be really cool if someone in Arizona could benefit from a hot tip from a customer in Florida. Currently our twitter environment is open to anyone although we may think about restricting the visibility in the not to distant future. We look forward to your tweets and we will answer them as quickly as possible....

Irregular apparel Irregular t-shirts

Whats hot is closeout and Irregular T-shirts. With price increases being seen at all the major manufacturers wholesale irregular t-shirts are one hot commodity. We are seeing very strong demand for white tee shirts and color tee shirts in either graded irregulars or first quality closeouts. The demand for white tee shirts seems to out stripping the supply and is forcing prices higher on both the irregular category as well as the first quality category. We are seeing strong demand for white tee shirts in girls (see style K7520) , in ladies in both Cotton Spandex (see style 92700) and in 100% cotton jersey (see style bs190) and in men's (see style A3081). The weather remains cool across most of the US and with tee shirts being this hot this early we believe we will have one of the better years in Off price T-shirts and Irregular t-shirts. Make sure you view our selection of T-shirts by size and our assorted size short sleeve T-shirts.

February 23rd

The off price show was extremely busy with customer traffic being at the highest level we have seen in years. We continue to see an increase in new customers as people move from regular price goods to off price special buys. The main comment we heard through out the show was that off price was the only price selling. Traffic remained heavy the entire show and probably ended to early as we missed a lot of opportunities on last minute customers arriving from Magic.

The trend at the show was to purchase either really cheap closeouts or high value styles. On the low end side we sold items were the goods could be retailed at extremely low prices and provide great margins like our intimate products. These styles are being liquidated between .65 cents and $1.00 for the zip hood. We continue to reduce prices on many of our styles to keep the inventory moving.

The same customer was also buying better goods were the quality and the price provided true value to the consumer. The men's beefy tee styles in the pocketed and non pocketed silhouette's were probably the strongest items we had in the booth. Click on the Style number links to view these items: 85260 and 85270 in the pocketed version and style number 85210 and 85220.

Lastly the trend at our booth was for immediate goods. Our customers needed goods fast and wanted to make sure we could get them shipped as soon as possible. Many of our orders started shipping on Monday only the second day of the show.

We would like to thank every one who attended the Off Price Show and for making it such a huge success this year. We will be at the ASD/AMD show in Las Vegas this March. For show dates and booth numbers click here. If you do not attend the shows the Internet is a great way to stay up with our pricing and inventory. You can see RG Riley at www.rgriley.com.

February 10th

Warmer weather across the Midwest, a return of the snow birds to Florida, the Super Bowl in Arizona, combined with advanced buying in front of the Off Price show in Las Vegas produced a solid increase in purchases from most of our customer base this last week.

Our customers are buying across the board with Capri pants in Missy, Plus and Girls leading the pack in the bottoms category. T-shirts in all age ranges have been strong as we have seen a general restocking of inventories. In general our customers are reporting better sales over the last week as consumers started to open their wallets. Our customers are reporting better sales not great sales; just that little increase in demand produced enough hope for improvement which led to higher purchases.

We anticipate strong sales at the off price show at the Venetian especially in the new styles we have added and the closeouts that have been updated over the last month. Expect inventories in pocket tees and basic tees to get hit hard. If you are attending the Off Price Show we hope to see you at our booths (2200, 2202 and 2204). If you are not attending the show please make sure you complete your orders on the web or call your sales representative to place your order before the show opens on Sunday February 15 th. Our sales staff will be leaving for the show on Friday and therefore we will be short staffed for about a week.

February 2nd update

Rg Riley is a leader in the wholesale offprice apparel business.
Sales continued to pick up over the last two weeks with heavy emphasis on Licensed sportswear and continue strong demand for extreme values. Check out the closeouts and while we know this takes time you can find some real deals on the closeout list.

New products continue to arrive on a daily basis and we are packing these items as fast as we can in our Virginia facility. We will be receiving over 1,000,000 units of closeout and irregular apparel over the next 30 days. Some of the strongest items will be in the men's area with pocket tee shirts in regular and big sizes dominating the first loads. Make sure to view the first quality Hanes Beefy over runs and pay particular notice to the men's Hanes beefy pocket tee shirts (85260) and the big men's version (85270). These are just two of the 12 new styles we are working on this month. You can view our progress by logging in and clicking on the "Recent Packings" button which will display all the items we have packed over the last 14 days. This is a great way for you to keep up with our new arrivals with out having to go to the web site daily.

The blank solid tee shirt business is picking up and we will be working on packing 7 trailer loads of tee shirts over the next few weeks in our Illinois facility. These are Fruit of the Loom and Russell Jerzees goods. We will have 50.50 and 100% cotton tee shirts in solid white and assorted colors within the next 10 days.

Lastly, we are restocking our California facility and LA. will be receiving a trailer load each week for the next three weeks. This will help our west coast customers save on freight and increase our west coast inventory levels in preparation for the upcoming Offprice show in Las Vegas. Please make sure to stop by our booths if you are attending the Offprice show in February. You can view the show dates and booth numbers by clicking on Trade Show Schedule.

Whats selling at www.rgriley.com

January started off slow and sales have been soft. In order to drive sales we have added 500 styles to our updated closeout list. Whats hot is off price and when I say off price I mean way off price. The closeouts have been generating a lot of traffic and have provided our customers with a great way to create promotions and generate sales. Cheap has been the number one word from our customer base. Our customers and subscribers are looking for great items at drastically reduced prices. In the area of transitional goods we have seen huge volume on our casual pants and our cardigans and jackets. These items are ideal for the early spring business and they have produced great results. The top styles in the transitional field are:

489i0 Missy Hanes French Terry zipper hooded jackets

005x0 Plus Hanes French Terry zipper hooded jackets

349I0 Girls Hanes French Terry Capri Pants

We have had several questions about the multiple assortments we have implemented for our newer styles. You will begin to see the assortments marked pack 1 assorted, pack 2 assorted, pack 5 white, etc. These assortments allow our subscribers to view the size scale of the cases and the colors included in the assortments for each individual packing. The customer is then free to purchase the size scale that is the best for there customers. While this is relatively new and will take about 6 months to move through the system we have already had a great response to this increased transparency. We hope to begin producing border scales and large size scales as we go forward.

Please make sure to add a comment or post a question and we will try to respond in a timely manner. If you would like to submit a private question or comment please drop us a note at sales@rgriley.com
